John from Cincinnati 1x01

This is a new HBO show, just days after the Sopranos finale, and it looks like pretty lame and strange (yes, this is the exact word for this show).

John from Cincinnati is about a family and its new friends: a man and a boy. The Yost family is in trouble when a man who was spumed by the Yosts years ago is arriving to the city to take a revenge. Meanwhile a wealthy boy wants to learn surfing so he goes to the Yost family, which consists of Mitch Yost, the father, his wife, Cissy, their drug-addicted surfer son, Butchie and Butchie's 14-year-old son, Shaun who is also a surfer or just wants to be a surfer. And here comes John from Cincinnati, a stranger who has a lot of money and a lot of secrets. He is a very crazy and strange guy, but easily befriends Butchie, who is a true loser.
This is the main storyline and the fate of this 10 part series is seems to be very bad, I think, because all the characters are very forgettable and boring, so maybe the story is the only chance to attract the viewers, but according to the first episode, this is not a chance. Altough the creator of this show is David Milch who is the man behind Deadwood, I can’t find any clues of creativity…yes, there are all kind of stuff, like drug abuse, boozing, surfing and so on, but it is not a mini-series, John from Cincinnati is just a short teen soap.

Despite of the good and well-known actors, for example Luke Perry or Luis Guzman, I don’t think that the acting was very good in this first episode. But in spite of all this crap, the show offers unique opportunity to know Imperial Beach, the last shoreline before the US and Mexican border, but I think this is not enough to sustain the interest of viewers through 2-3 episodes.
